Abstract
Korea is an ‘addicted country’ in which one in eight people are addicted to drugs,
alcohol and gambling etc. and the socio-economic cost of this is so enormous that
it is difficult to estimate. In particular, the number of drug addicts is estimated to be
about 10 times the number of drug offenders arrested in the concept of hidden crime,
but there is no accurate data, or official statistics on drug addiction in Korea. This
study was able to derive meaningful results because a survey was conducted with
field experts and public officials such as school health teachers, drug abuse
prevention instructors, and parents in Gyeonggi-do. Based on the results of this
study, we propose the following improvement plans and education policies for the
drug prevention management project in Gyeonggi province. The drug problem in
Korea has reached a level that cannot be overlooked anymore, and a preemptive
countermeasure is needed to solve this problem. Above all, it is imperative that the
preventive management system works properly by focusing on the prevention of
drugs. To do this, substantial control tower should be set up to oversee drug-related
policy directions along with the government’s interest and budget support, and
efficient operation is important also.
